TL;DR

For HSK 2.0, the passing score is 120/200 (60%) for Levels 1-2 and 180/300 (60%) for Levels 3-6. Each section must score at least 60% separately. For HSK 3.0 (launching July 2026), the passing threshold is expected to remain at 60%. Most Chinese universities require HSK 4 (score 180+) or HSK 5 (score 180+) for admission.

Quick Answer

The HSK passing score is 60% of the total. For HSK 1-2 that's 120 out of 200 points. For HSK 3-6 it's 180 out of 300. Each section (listening, reading, writing) must reach 60% individually. Most Chinese universities require HSK 4 or HSK 5 for admission.

HSK Passing Score Overview

The fundamental rule for HSK scoring is simple: you need 60% to pass. This applies across all levels and all sections of the exam. There is no curve, no adjustment, and no percentile ranking — your score is based entirely on how many questions you answer correctly.

However, the 60% rule comes with an important caveat: each section must reach 60% individually. You cannot compensate for a low score in one section with a high score in another. If you score 95% on reading but only 50% on listening, you fail — even if your total percentage is above 60%. This means balanced preparation across all sections is essential.

The total number of points varies by level. HSK 1 and HSK 2 have two sections (listening and reading) with a maximum of 200 points. HSK 3 through HSK 6 have three sections (listening, reading, and writing) with a maximum of 300 points. The passing threshold scales accordingly.

Passing Score
In the context of the HSK, the minimum score required to receive official certification at a given level. Set at 60% of total points, with each section also requiring at least 60% individually. Passing results in an official HSK certificate issued by Chinese Testing International.

HSK 2.0 Passing Scores by Level

The following table shows the complete score breakdown for every HSK 2.0 level, including the total points available, passing score, sections tested, points per section, and the minimum passing score for each section:

LevelTotal PointsPass ScoreSectionsPoints/SectionSection Pass
HSK 1200120Listening, Reading10060
HSK 2200120Listening, Reading10060
HSK 3300180Listening, Reading, Writing10060
HSK 4300180Listening, Reading, Writing10060
HSK 5300180Listening, Reading, Writing10060
HSK 6300180Listening, Reading, Writing10060

Key takeaway: The pattern is consistent across all levels. 60% total, 60% per section. The only structural difference is that HSK 1-2 have two sections (200 points max) while HSK 3-6 have three sections (300 points max).

HSK 3.0 Passing Scores (Expected)

HSK 3.0 launches in July 2026, and while the official scoring structure has not been fully published, here is what we know so far based on the pilot exam held January 31, 2026, and official announcements from Chinese Testing International:

  • The 60% pass threshold is expected to continue. Chinese Testing International has not announced any change to the fundamental passing standard.
  • More sections means more individual thresholds. HSK 3.0 tests up to 5 skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing, translation). Each section is expected to require 60% individually, meaning balanced preparation is even more critical.
  • Levels 7-9 use a combined exam. You take a single test and your total score determines whether you are certified at Level 7, 8, or 9. The specific score thresholds for each level within this combined exam have not been published yet.
  • Speaking scores are integrated. Unlike HSK 2.0 where speaking (HSKK) was a separate optional exam, HSK 3.0 includes speaking as part of the main exam from Level 3 onward. This means your speaking score directly affects your pass/fail result.

Note: This section will be updated with official HSK 3.0 scoring details as they are published by Chinese Testing International. Check back after July 2026 for confirmed score structures. For the latest on the HSK 3.0 transition, see our complete HSK 3.0 guide.

Score Breakdown by Section

Understanding how each section is scored helps you allocate your study time effectively. Under HSK 2.0, here is how the sections break down:

Listening Section (听力)

The listening section is worth 100 points at every level. You hear recorded Chinese speech — dialogues, short passages, or individual sentences — and answer multiple-choice questions about what you heard. At lower levels (HSK 1-2), the speech is slow and uses basic vocabulary. At higher levels (HSK 5-6), the speech approaches natural speed and covers complex topics. Each audio clip is played only once — there are no replays. This makes listening preparation critical, as you must comprehend the content in real time.

Reading Section (阅读)

The reading section is also worth 100 points at every level. It tests your ability to understand written Chinese, including individual sentences, short paragraphs, and longer passages. At lower levels, questions may ask you to match pictures with sentences or determine if a sentence is true or false. At higher levels, you'll read multi-paragraph texts and answer comprehension questions. Reading speed is important — there are many questions and limited time, so you need to read efficiently without getting stuck on unfamiliar characters.

Writing Section (书写)

The writing section appears only in HSK 3-6 and is worth 100 points. At HSK 3, you reorder scrambled words into correct sentences. At HSK 4, you write sentences using provided words or images. At HSK 5, you write a short essay based on prompts (about 80 characters). At HSK 6, you read a 1,000-character passage and then rewrite it from memory in about 400 characters, also writing a short opinion essay. The writing section is generally considered the most challenging, particularly at HSK 5 and 6 where handwriting ability, vocabulary range, and grammar accuracy are all tested simultaneously.

CEFR
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages — an international standard for describing language proficiency on a scale from A1 (beginner) to C2 (mastery). The HSK 3.0 system is designed to map directly to CEFR levels, improving international comparability.

What Counts as a Good HSK Score?

While 60% is the minimum to pass, different goals require different score targets. Here is a general framework for evaluating your HSK score:

Score Range (%)RatingHSK 3-6 ScoreWhat It Means
90-100%Excellent270-300Strong mastery; ready for the next level
80-89%Very Good240-269Competitive for university admissions and scholarships
70-79%Good210-239Solid pass; meets most institutional requirements
60-69%Pass180-209Minimum pass; may not meet competitive program requirements
Below 60%FailBelow 180No certificate issued; retake needed

For university applications: Aim for at least 70% (210+ on HSK 3-6). While 180 technically passes, competitive programs and scholarships favor applicants with higher scores. The Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) program, for example, is highly competitive, and applicants with scores well above the minimum have a significant advantage.

For employment: Most employers care primarily about which level you passed, not your exact score. However, if you are choosing between attempting a higher level with a risk of barely passing versus passing a lower level with a strong score, consider that a comfortable pass at a lower level may be more useful than a borderline pass at a higher one — especially if you need the certificate soon.

University Admission Requirements

Chinese university admissions vary by institution, program, and degree level. The following table shows common HSK requirements at representative Chinese universities. Always verify current requirements directly with your target institution, as policies can change.

CSC Scholarship: The Chinese Government Scholarship generally requires HSK 4 (score 180+) for science and engineering programs and HSK 5 (score 180+) for liberal arts and Chinese language programs. However, since the scholarship is highly competitive, applicants with scores of 210+ or higher have a meaningful advantage. Some CSC host universities set their own higher minimums.

How HSK Scores Are Calculated

Understanding how the HSK is scored can help you approach the exam strategically. Here are the key facts about HSK scoring:

No Curve

The HSK uses absolute scoring. There is no curve, no bell-curve adjustment, and no percentile ranking. Your score is determined entirely by how many questions you answer correctly, not by how other test-takers perform. This means the difficulty of passing is consistent from one test administration to the next — you are competing against the standard, not against other students.

Computer-Based Scoring

For the listening and reading sections, scoring is fully automated — your answer sheet is scanned (paper-based) or recorded (computer-based), and correct answers are counted mechanically. For the writing section at HSK 5-6, trained human graders score your essays using standardized rubrics. Multiple graders may evaluate the same response to ensure consistency. Computer-based tests generally produce faster results (1-2 weeks) compared to paper-based tests (2-4 weeks).

Raw Scores Only

Your HSK score report shows your raw score for each section and your total score. There is no weighted scoring, no scaled scores, and no equating between different test forms. Each question is worth the same number of points within its section. Your certificate shows whether you passed and your exact scores — it does not show percentile rankings or comparisons to other test-takers.

Tips to Maximize Your HSK Score

Whether you are aiming to barely pass or score in the 90th percentile, these strategies will help you maximize your HSK score:

Listening Section Strategies

  • Read the questions first. Use the time before each audio clip to read the answer choices. Knowing what to listen for dramatically improves comprehension.
  • Don't get stuck. If you miss an answer, move on immediately. The audio keeps playing, and dwelling on a missed question will cause you to miss the next one.
  • Practice with real exam speed. Train with audio at natural Chinese speaking speed, not slowed-down learner audio. The exam audio is played once at normal pace.
  • Focus on keywords. You don't need to understand every word — identify the key nouns, verbs, and numbers that the questions ask about.

Reading Section Strategies

  • Manage your time. The reading section has many questions. Don't spend too long on any single passage — skip difficult questions and return to them if time permits.
  • Use elimination. On multiple-choice questions, eliminate obviously wrong answers first, then choose among the remaining options.
  • Build reading speed. Practice reading Chinese texts at speed, not just for comprehension. Time yourself during practice sessions.
  • Learn characters in context. Memorizing characters in isolation is less effective than learning them within words and sentences. Use spaced repetition with example sentences.

Writing Section Strategies

  • Practice the exact task type. Each HSK level has specific writing tasks (word reordering, sentence completion, essay writing). Practice the specific task type for your level, not just general writing.
  • Use familiar vocabulary. In essay sections, stick to words you know well rather than attempting complex vocabulary you might misspell or misuse.
  • Structure your responses. For HSK 5-6 essays, use clear paragraph structure with a beginning, middle, and end. Graders appreciate organized, coherent writing.
  • Write legibly. For paper-based tests, unclear handwriting can cost you points. Practice writing characters neatly and at a consistent size.

General Strategies

  • Learn 100% of the vocabulary list. The exam is built from the official word list. Knowing every word on the list is the single most impactful preparation step.
  • Take timed practice exams. Simulate real exam conditions — full-length, timed, no dictionary. This builds stamina and reduces test-day anxiety.
  • Use spaced repetition for vocabulary. Spaced repetition is proven to reduce vocabulary learning time by 30-50% compared to traditional methods. Consistent 15-30 minute daily sessions are more effective than occasional long study sessions.
  • Answer every question. There is no penalty for wrong answers. Never leave a question blank — an educated guess has a chance of earning points, while a blank answer never will.

HSK Score Validity

Understanding how long your HSK score lasts is important for planning, especially if you are taking the exam for a specific application deadline.

The 2-Year Guideline

HSK certificates are generally considered valid for approximately 2 years from the test date for university admissions and scholarship applications. This is the standard accepted by most Chinese universities, the CSC scholarship program, and most Confucius Institute programs. The logic is that language proficiency can deteriorate without practice, so institutions want reasonably recent proof of ability.

No Official Expiration

Technically, the HSK certificate itself does not have a printed expiration date. The 2-year guideline is a policy applied by institutions, not a rule from Chinese Testing International. This means some organizations — particularly employers — may accept older certificates, especially if you can demonstrate continued use of Chinese. However, for formal applications (universities, scholarships, visas), always assume the 2-year standard applies.

HSK 2.0 Certificates After HSK 3.0 Launches

Existing HSK 2.0 certificates remain valid for their normal validity period regardless of the transition to HSK 3.0. If you passed HSK 4 under the 2.0 system in 2025, that certificate is still recognized until approximately 2027. Chinese Testing International has confirmed that HSK 2.0 results will continue to be honored during and after the transition period.

Planning Around Validity

If you need an HSK certificate for a specific application, work backward from your deadline. Allow at least 2-4 weeks for score release after the exam, plus time for certificate delivery if you need the physical certificate. Most institutions accept the electronic score report from ChineseTest.cn. Ideally, take the exam 3-6 months before your application deadline to allow time for a potential retake if needed.
