The first intermediate level. You can talk about a wide range of topics with native speakers and read longer texts on familiar subjects.
What the new HSK 4 exam expects
From the CLEC, HSK Test Syllabus (中文水平考试 HSK 考试大纲), released 15 November 2025. The syllabus lists 1,000 entries at this level, one per sense, which is 990 distinct words.
When you can sit HSK 4

HSK 4 on the old exam and the new one
Old HSK 4 was set at 1,200 words in total. New HSK 4 expects 2,000. The level numbers stayed; what each one asks for did not.
A learner who knows every word on the old HSK 4 list is ready for new HSK 3 by our count against the official lists, counting a level as ready at four words in five.
What you can do at HSK 4
- Discuss news, work and social topics at some length
- Read articles and follow the thread of a longer argument
- Understand normal-speed speech on familiar subjects
- Write short structured pieces, such as an email or a description

How to study for HSK 4
- 1.The vocabulary step up from HSK 3 is large. Plan for steady daily review rather than a burst before the exam.
- 2.Start reading material written for native speakers on topics you already know.
- 3.Prepare for the speaking test alongside the written one; they are registered together.
