What the new HSK 5 exam expects
From the CLEC, HSK Test Syllabus (中文水平考试 HSK 考试大纲), released 15 November 2025. The syllabus lists 1,600 entries at this level, one per sense, which is 1,579 distinct words.
When you can sit HSK 5

HSK 5 on the old exam and the new one
Old HSK 5 was set at 2,500 words in total. New HSK 5 expects 3,600. The level numbers stayed; what each one asks for did not.
A learner who knows every word on the old HSK 5 list is ready for new HSK 4 by our count against the official lists, counting a level as ready at four words in five.
What you can do at HSK 5
- Read newspaper and magazine articles with occasional help
- Follow films and TV programmes on familiar subjects
- Give a structured spoken presentation
- Write longer pieces that argue a point

How to study for HSK 5
- 1.Much of the new vocabulary is written language. Read widely and look words up as they come.
- 2.Learn words in families: a character you know usually gives you a head start on the next word that uses it.
- 3.Time yourself on reading passages. Speed, not only accuracy, separates a pass from a fail here.
