Sentence-final 呢
呢 particle
The particle 呢 (ne) at the end of a sentence asks reciprocal questions ("And you?"), indicates an action is ongoing, or adds a sense of emphasis and wonder.
Pattern
Subject + 呢? OR Statement + 呢
Explanation
呢 (ne) is a versatile sentence-final particle with several distinct uses. Unlike 吗 (which turns statements into yes/no questions), 呢 has a softer, more conversational function.
The most common use of 呢 is the "bounce-back" question. After someone answers a question, you can ask the same question back by simply saying the subject + 呢: "你好吗?" "我很好,你呢?" (How are you? / I'm good, and you?). This is extremely common and natural in Chinese conversation. You don't need to repeat the whole question — just "你呢?" is enough.
呢 is also used to ask "where is...?" with a subject: "我的手机呢?" — "Where's my phone?" This is a casual, everyday way to ask about the location or whereabouts of something. It implies the speaker expects the thing to be nearby or known.
Additionally, 呢 can reinforce an ongoing action, similar to its use with the progressive 在...呢 pattern: "我在看书呢" — "I'm reading (right now)." In this case, 呢 adds a sense of "as we speak" or "at this very moment."
呢 can also soften questions that use question words (什么, 哪里, etc.): "你去哪儿呢?" sounds warmer and more conversational than "你去哪儿?"

Correct
你好吗?你呢?
呢 goes at the end of its phrase, not at the beginning. It is a sentence-final particle.
