Progressive Aspect (正在/在...呢)
正在 + verb
正在 (zhèngzài) or 在 (zài) before a verb indicates an action in progress, equivalent to English "-ing." Adding 呢 (ne) at the end reinforces the ongoing nature.
Pattern
Subject + 正在/在 + Verb (+ Object) + (呢)
Explanation
To express that an action is happening right now, place 在 (zài) or 正在 (zhèngzài) before the verb. 正在 is slightly more emphatic, stressing "right at this moment." Both translate to the English present progressive ("-ing" form).
For example, "他在看书" (tā zài kàn shū) means "He is reading." You can also say "他正在看书" for extra emphasis: "He is reading right now." Both are correct and commonly used.
Adding 呢 (ne) at the end of the sentence reinforces the ongoing action: "他在看书呢" — "He is reading (you know)." You can even use 呢 alone without 在 to imply an ongoing action: "他看书呢." However, this is more casual and less explicit.
The full combination gives you maximum emphasis: "他正在看书呢" — "He is right in the middle of reading." In practice, any combination of 在/正在 and 呢 works: 在...呢, 正在...呢, 正在..., or 在... alone.
