文 is a Chinese character with radical 文 (script), HSK 1 on the new exam.
Etymology
Oracle-bone origin
文 is attested in oracle-bone script as a pictograph of a standing person viewed from the front, with a marked pattern on the chest; often a cross, a heart shape, or an X. Scholars agree the original referent was body tattooing or ritual chest markings, and the character's earliest meaning was 'pattern' or 'marking on a body'. This is one of the most securely interpreted oracle-bone graphs.
Form evolution
In bronze inscriptions the chest marking becomes more stylised, sometimes a simple X or a heart. Seal script regularises the human figure into a cross-legged stance with the chest mark reduced to a small stroke. Clerical script flattens the whole figure into the four strokes of modern 文, losing all visual trace of the original standing person.
How the meaning evolved
From 'bodily pattern' the meaning extended to patterns in general, then to written symbols (which are patterns on bamboo or silk), then to literature, writing, culture, and civility. Modern 文 carries all these layers at once: 文字 (written character), 文学 (literature), 文化 (culture), 文明 (civilisation). The oldest sense survives in 文身 (tattoo), which is literally the original meaning of the graph.
Cultural note
The pairing 文 / 武 (civil / martial) is one of the oldest conceptual dichotomies in Chinese thought, going back to the Zhou dynasty. Emperors often took posthumous titles using one or the other: 汉文帝 (Emperor Wen of Han) versus 汉武帝 (Emperor Wu of Han). The fact that 文身 (tattoo) uses 文 in its oldest literal sense is a useful memory hook for learners.
