Oracle-bone forms of 方 show a plough or a handled blade, likely a two-handed digging tool used to turn soil. Some scholars instead read the early graph as a person with outstretched arms marking the cardinal directions, but the plough reading is better attested in Shang contexts. The phonetic value was borrowed very early to write the abstract senses that now dominate.
Form evolution
The oracle-bone pictograph was already stylised by the bronze period, with the blade and handle compressed into a cross-like frame. Seal script regularised this into the familiar top stroke, hooked vertical, and enclosed lower element. Clerical and modern 楷书 further flattened the curves, giving the four clean strokes used today.
