最 (zuì) means "most" with HSK 2 on the new exam.
Pronunciation
Meaning
Primary: most
Etymology
Oracle-bone origin
最 does not appear in oracle-bone script and is a later formation. The modern top element is 曰 (to say), but this is a graphic corruption; in seal script the top was 冃 (a cloth covering or helmet), and the bottom was 取 (to seize). The original meaning was 'to seize by force, take the best part of spoils', which is why it came to mean 'most, superlative'.
Form evolution
Seal script shows 冃 over 取 clearly, with the hand and ear of 取 still visible. Clerical script flattened 冃 into something resembling 曰 (the two are often confused in clerical hands), and 楷书 inherited this corruption so that modern 最 looks like 曰 over 取 even though the top stroke is historically a covering, not a mouth.
How the meaning evolved
The original verbal sense 'seize the best, take the prize' became a noun 'the best, the choicest', then an adverb marking the superlative degree; the meaning that now dominates. Classical texts still show the verbal and nominal uses (最于 = 'gather the best of'), but modern Mandarin uses 最 almost exclusively as the adverb 'most'.
Cultural note
Because the top of 最 is written 曰 in modern form but is historically 冃, calligraphy manuals often note it as an example of 讹变 (graphic corruption), where a component is rewritten into a more familiar shape over time. Learners never need the original meaning, but it explains why 最 has such a strong 'winning' feel in compounds like 最佳 and 最强.
