Apparently (看起来)
看起来
看起来 means "it looks like" or "apparently," used to express a judgment based on outward appearance or first impressions that may not reflect the full truth.
Pattern
Subject + 看起来 + Adjective/Clause
Explanation
看起来 literally means "looking at it, it seems..." and is used to make observations or inferences based on external appearance. It introduces a subjective judgment — what something appears to be on the surface. There is often an implied contrast: things may look a certain way but the reality could be different.
看起来 is placed before the predicate or at the beginning of a sentence. It can describe people, situations, objects, or abstract matters. When describing a person, it often comments on their emotional state, health, or age based on appearance.
Similar expressions include 看上去 (which is nearly synonymous) and 似乎 (which means "seemingly" and is more literary). 好像 is another close synonym but is more general and does not specifically emphasize visual appearance. 看起来 is natural in both spoken and written Chinese.
