Serial Verb Construction

A serial verb construction (连动句) is a sentence where one subject performs two or more actions expressed by consecutive verb phrases with no conjunction between them. The verbs share the same subject and appear in chronological or logical order. This is a fundamental Chinese sentence pattern that does not have a direct equivalent in English.

There are several common types of serial verb constructions. First, sequential actions: 他站起来走了出去 (He stood up and walked out) — the actions happen in time order. Second, purpose: 我去图书馆借书 (I go to the library to borrow books) — the second action is the purpose of the first. Third, manner: 他骑自行车去上班 (He rides a bike to go to work) — the first verb describes the means.

The key rule is that negation and adverbs apply to the first verb in the series, which then governs the entire chain. For example, 我没去图书馆借书 negates the entire action, not just "going." Understanding serial verb constructions is essential for producing natural Chinese sentences, as Chinese frequently chains actions together where English would use conjunctions or subordinate clauses.
