When to use it
Chinese has no single word for "likewise"; you reflect the content. After 很高兴认识你 (nice to meet you), reply 我也很高兴认识你. After a compliment, the classic move is 彼此彼此 ("same to you / likewise"), which is slightly old-fashioned but still widely used by men in business contexts and has a warm, modest flavor. Younger speakers just say 你也是 (you too) or 我也是. 同样 (tóng yàng) works when echoing a wish: 同样祝你好运! Avoid a bare 一样; it sounds incomplete.
