Hotels, train stations, HSK test centers, and most official transactions in China require a passport; carry it on you, not in the hotel safe. 签证 (qiānzhèng) is visa. For a photocopy use 复印 (fùyìn): 我去复印护照 (I will photocopy my passport). Lost passport = 护照丢了; go to your embassy and file a 报警 (police report) immediately; the combination is needed for replacement.
