工作日 literally means 'work day' and refers to Monday through Friday. In China, the five-day workweek is standard for offices and government, but retail, restaurants, and service industries often run seven days a week. You'll hear 工作日 a lot when talking about bank hours, delivery times, or government office appointments; things that close on weekends. The opposite is 周末 (zhōumò, weekend) or 休息日 (xiūxi rì, rest day). Note that 平日 (píngrì) is a near-synonym but slightly more literary; 工作日 is the everyday spoken choice.
