Etymology
Oracle-bone origin
人 is one of the oldest and most transparent pictographs in the script. Oracle bone and bronze forms show a side view of a standing human: a head implied at the top, an arm extending forward, and legs descending. It depicts a person in profile, not frontally.
Form evolution
The oracle bone silhouette of a bending figure is preserved with remarkable stability through bronze and seal script, which merely straightens and balances the two strokes. Clerical script reduced it to the two-stroke form 人 we use today, and the modern楷 form is essentially identical to the clerical. When 人 appears as a left-side radical it is written 亻.
How the meaning evolved
The core meaning 'person, human being' has not shifted since the earliest texts. It extends freely to 'other people' (别人), 'adult' (大人), and nationality or role suffixes (中国人, 工人). Classical usage sometimes contrasts 人 with 民 (the common populace) or 己 (oneself), but the basic denotation has stayed stable for over three thousand years.
Cultural note
The component 亻 is one of the most productive radicals in the writing system, appearing in hundreds of characters related to people and their actions (他, 们, 你, 休, 作). Calligraphers often cite 人 as the test case for stroke balance because its two strokes must lean against each other without either dominating.
