Pronunciation
Meaning
Primary: child
Other meanings:
- son
Etymology
Oracle-bone origin
子 is a clear pictograph in oracle-bone script, showing an infant with an oversized head, small body, and arms either swaddled or reaching outward. Some early graphs depict visible hair or fontanelles on the head. It is one of the oldest and most stable characters in the Chinese writing system.
Form evolution
The oracle-bone form was already highly schematic. Bronze inscriptions rounded the body and arms, seal script regularised the head into a single horizontal stroke with a vertical body, and clerical script produced the three-stroke form we use today. The modern 楷书 shape is essentially the clerical form with sharper corners.
How the meaning evolved
The original meaning was 'child, infant, offspring', and this is preserved in compounds like 孩子 and 儿子. It extended early to 'seed' (种子), 'small thing' (扣子, 椅子), and was grammaticalised as a noun suffix in Mandarin, where it carries no lexical meaning. Classical Chinese also uses 子 as an honorific for a master or philosopher, as in 孔子 and 老子.
Cultural note
子 is the first of the twelve Earthly Branches and appears in the zodiac cycle as the Rat (子鼠) and in the traditional time system for 11pm-1am. Learners often overlook that the suffix 子 is toneless in modern Mandarin, which changes the rhythm of words like 桌子 compared with lexical uses like 子女.
Mnemonic
A baby with outstretched arms — child
