儿 (ér) means "son, child" with radical 儿 (legs), HSK 1 on the new exam.

Meaning
Primary: son
Other meanings:
- child
Etymology
Oracle-bone origin
The oracle bone form of 儿 shows a kneeling or standing human figure with an exaggerated open top, representing the unclosed fontanelle of a small child. It is a pictograph of a child whose skull has not yet fully fused, which in ancient medical understanding marked the early years of life. The same element appears at the bottom of many characters referring to people, such as 見 and 兄.
Form evolution
Bronze inscriptions retain the round open-headed child figure, and seal script stylises it into two curving legs with a gap at the top. Clerical script flattened and straightened these curves, producing the two-stroke form seen today. The traditional character 兒 preserves the original 臼-like top (the open skull) over the human legs; simplified 儿 keeps only the legs, losing the pictographic head entirely.
How the meaning evolved
The original meaning was small child, which broadened to son and then to a general diminutive marker. In northern Mandarin, especially Beijing speech, 儿 became the famous erhua suffix that attaches to nouns with a retroflex ending (花儿, 玩儿), often carrying a colloquial or affectionate tone. The son and child senses remain live in words like 儿子 and 婴儿.
Cultural note
Erhua is one of the clearest markers of northern versus southern Mandarin, and southern speakers often drop or resist it. The pairing 儿女 (sons and daughters, children in general) preserves the original nominal meaning and is common in idioms about family lineage.
