把 Construction
把字句
The 把 (bǎ) construction moves the object before the verb to emphasize what happens to it. It is used when the action causes a definite change, movement, or result to the object.
Pattern
Subject + 把 + Object + Verb + Complement/Result
Explanation
The 把 construction is one of the most important and distinctive sentence patterns in Chinese. In a normal SVO sentence you say "I opened the door" — 我开了门. With 把, you pull the object forward: 我把门开了. The meaning is the same, but the emphasis shifts to what happened to the door.
Why does Chinese need this? Because many verbs require additional information after them — a result, a direction, a location. In "Put the book on the table," the object (book) cannot appear after both the verb and the location. The 把 construction solves this by placing the object before the verb: 把书放在桌子上.
There are three rules to remember. First, the object of 把 must be specific or known — you cannot say 把一本书 unless the listener already knows which book. Second, the verb cannot stand alone; it needs a complement, 了, a directional word, or some other "extra" element. You cannot say 我把门开 — it must be 我把门开了 or 我把门打开. Third, negation words (不, 没) and auxiliary verbs (想, 要, 能) go before 把, not before the main verb.
A helpful way to think about 把 is: "Take [object] and [do something specific to it]." If the action produces a concrete result on a definite object, 把 is likely the right choice.
