Complex Complement Chains
复杂补语
Complex complement chains combine multiple complements after a verb to express result, direction, and degree in a single predicate.
Pattern
Verb + Resultative/State Complement + Directional Complement
Explanation
In earlier HSK levels you learned simple resultative complements (e.g., 看见) and directional complements (e.g., 走出去). At the HSK 4 level, these can be chained together to create richer descriptions of actions and their outcomes. A complex complement chain might combine a resultative complement with a directional complement, or layer a degree complement on top of a result.
The key to mastering complex complements is understanding the fixed order: the main verb comes first, then the resultative or state complement, followed by any directional complement. For example, 拿出来 (take out) chains the verb 拿 with the directional complement 出来. You can further expand this: 拿得出来 adds a potential complement meaning "able to take out."
When using 得 or 不 to form potential complements within a chain, they are inserted between the verb and the first complement element. Pay attention to the tight bonding between complement elements — you cannot insert other words between them. Practice with common verb-complement combinations before attempting longer chains.
