另外 is a versatile word that serves as both a conjunction and an adjective/adverb. As a conjunction, it connects two sentences or clauses, introducing additional information. It typically appears at the beginning of the second sentence and functions similarly to "furthermore," "moreover," or "in addition" in English.
As an adjective/adverb, 另外 means "other" or "separately" and modifies nouns or verbs. For example, 另外一个 means "another one." This dual usage makes 另外 one of the most practical connectors in intermediate Chinese.
Similar words include 此外 (cǐwài, more formal) and 而且 (érqiě, which requires a preceding clause with 不但 or similar). Unlike 而且, 另外 can stand alone at the start of a new topic.
